Antigua lit up tonight to greet Atlantic Challenge (Dan Parsons (30) and Olly Clark (31)), after their heroic efforts in the world’s toughest row, the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. The two-man team from the UK came third in the overall race and first of all the pairs, beating 23 other teams to the finish line in Antigua.
Dan and Olly took on the arduous challenge to raise money for the Army Benevolent Fund and Prostate Cancer UK. It took Dan and Olly 42 days 17 hours and 59 minutes.
Skipper Dan comments on the race: “Before signing up to the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, neither Dan nor I had ever rowed before; we took to this like ducks to water and I’m so proud of our achievement to come third in the race overall and win the pairs class – I’m over the moon.”

The teams row in shifts of two hours on and two hours off. The conditions are tough, teams battle tropical storms, 40ft waves, sleep deprivation, seasickness and excruciating body sores. As well as all these harsh conditions; the 2015/16 fleet also faced the first tropical storm to form in January since 1978 and the fourth in recorded history.

Dan and Olly met at Loughborough University, after discovering they had grown up a few miles apart in Canterbury. Although he had never rowed before, Dan was inspired after seeing Ben Fogle and James Cracknell conquer the ocean in 2005/6, and persuaded Olly to join him on his mission. A keen water sportsman, Dan has previously competed in international sailing events and was part of the British Sailing Team. Olly, who serves for the Royal Engineers and has been deployed on operations to Afghanistan, embraced the challenge to test his mental and physical limits.
