Race Two – Friday 11th March
The trade winds were still pumping for Race Two of the Superyacht Challenge Antigua, with white water hissing at the rails of the magnificent superyachts. Compared to Race One, the wind had veered slightly to the east, giving some shelter in the lee of Antigua. However, even inshore the wind speed was barely below 19 knots. Offshore out of the wind shadow, the breeze was consistently over 20 knots with a significant increase in sea state. Class winners for Race Two were, the 112ft Sparkman & Stephens sloop Kawil, skippered by Robert Lloyd. The 112ft Baltic Nilaya, with Filip Balcaen at the helm, and the 218ft Dykstra/Reichel Pugh ketch Hetairos, skippered by Graham Newton. The Race Committee led by PRO Hank Stuart, chose a race area along the South Coast of Antigua with a deep-water mark four and a half miles offshore. The Buccaneers Class raced on a course of approximately 22nm with long reaching legs and a long beat, prior to a short reaching component to finish. The Corsairs and Privateers enjoyed a longer course of over 27nm, with the added thrill of a technical windward leeward component, along the south coast of Antigua.
Buccaneers Class
The 112ft Sparkman & Stephens sloop Kawil, skippered by Robert Lloyd was the class winner for Race Two. After two races the 121ft Dyksra sloop Action is the class leader with John McMonigall’s Oyster 82 Zig Zag in third. Kawil is taking part in their fourth regatta this year, having won class winner on two previous occasions.
Corsairs Class
The 112ft Baltic Nilaya, with Filip Balcaen at the helm, scored their second race win to lead the class by four points after two races. The J-Class Hanuman did not compete today and Swan 90 Freya tore their headsail and retired to Nelson’s Dockyard with all crew safe and well.
Privateers Class
The 218ft Dykstra/Reichel Pugh ketch Hetairos took line honours and the race win by just 55 seconds after ORCsy time correction from the 140ft German Frers ketch Rebecca, skippered by Rob Foxell. With Fuzz Spanhake on the helm and Marc Lagessse as navigator, Rebecca executed the best start of the day, just two seconds shy of the B of the bang. It was great to see the 180ft Dykstra ketch Kamaxitha, skippered by Tim Urwin, out on the water. Kamaxitha was third but less than seven minutes off the race winner. Hetairos leads the class by two points midway through the series.
